She was dreaming. Dreaming that David was holding her, that they were back in those halcyon days when they had loved each other and the world was a wonderful place.

He held her tenderly, his chin resting on her hair. She could hear his heartbeat beneath her cheek, feel the movement of his chest as he breathed. The rightness of it brought its usual glow of happiness, and, sighing, she snuggled closer.

His arms tightened protectively.

Stretching out a hand, she stroked his jaw, her fingertips following the cleft in his chin before moving up to his lips. When he kissed the slim fingers that were tracing his mouth, eyes closed, she raised her face invitingly.

He kissed her lightly, sweetly.

She opened her mouth and he deepened the kiss. Her breathing quickening and a tingling warmth spreading through her, she rubbed one smooth, silky leg against the roughness of his.

In response, he stroked her gently, almost reverently—her arms, her shoulders, her neck, her ribcage, her slender waist—as if every part of her was precious, every part important to him.

Her breasts ached for his touch, and when his hand finally found their firm softness her pulse began to do funny things and she kept forgetting to breathe.

Though her entire being responded to his slow, skilful caresses, she said nothing. Because there was nothing to say that his hands didn’t already know.

Still in a dreamlike state, she began to caress him back. There wasn’t a part of him that she didn’t love, that didn’t give her pleasure—his muscular chest, with its small, leathery nipples, his lean waist, his taut belly…

She heard his indrawn breath, then his fingers closed lightly round her wrist and he whispered softly, ‘You’d better stop. Unless you want me to make love to you…?’

‘Mmm,’ she murmured, and, wriggling her wrist free, caressed his firm flesh once more.

He eased her onto her back, and a moment later she felt his weight with a surge of gladness.

They fitted together as naturally as if they were two halves of a whole, and her body responded joyfully to his long slow thrusts with an urgency that catapulted them both skywards.

Even when that first urgency was satisfied, their lovemaking was explosive, ecstatic. It seemed so long since they had made love that, awake or dreaming, like someone who was starving, she couldn’t get enough of him.
